A post about a cancelled FNF mod.

Posted by TRICKSTERhat - April 25th, 2022

Sup, it's me, TRICKSTERhat.

It's been a little while, but I've had a couple of projects being planned and all, but in the middle, I felt like talking about an old project that didn't get to see the light of day due to reasons.

(small warning: Some of the gifs may trigger epileptic reactions. Please be careful when looking at them.)

Welcome to 1Bit, 1Song (The Friday Night Funkin mod)

... well, so it was before it got cancelled.

Pictured: A mockup of the mod prior to the background assets being finished. Rival is a placeholder.

This was intended to be an entrypoint to FNF modding, while I was working on a more ambitious OC mod, essentially so I could get used to how it all works, I simply made a couple of sprites in the 1bit style I had some experience with at the time.

Pretty much every animation asset was finished overnight, despite the small time, I still feel pretty proud of how they came out.

Pictured: The animations made for Boyfriend and Girlfriend.

The sprites themselves were pretty much made by me looking at the ones from Week 6 and trying to adapt them into my style, which worked pretty well for the look of the sprites themselves.

It wouldn't be later where I would start work on the backgrounds, which would be based on already existing pieces of mine.

Pictured: The two backgrounds made for the mod, left was intended to be the principal one, right was made for a "what-if there was a song 2."

Of course, as every FNF mod would do at the time as well, I'd hide a couple of references to other mods or even the original game itself, which were pretty fun to make as I wanted to add a bit more personality into these. Especially left.

This wouldn't be the only place where I'd hide references, as even in the files I worked on a couple of sprites for no reason at all, just as easter eggs.

Pictured: A couple of sprites I've made in reference to other mods, not part of the actual mod but in the files. (Minus BF from FNF Minus, Bob from Every FNF Mod ever and Garcello from Smoke Em Out Struggle.)

I also worked on a couple of dumb text files for the intro thingy. They were mostly references to the mod itself or other games, just wrote whatever the hell I felt was funny.

So, what about the music? Well, this mod was intended to be simple, so at most the music would be an arrangement of an existing FNF song. My choice, Roses. As it was (and still is) my favorite FNF song.

Another choice was Act IV Part 2 from Ninja Gaiden III (NES), why? No reason, I just liked it.

The arrangement would have been made in Famitracker, using the 2A03+VRC6 chips so it would of sounded very cool.

Yet again, the mod got cancelled before any work on that could be done.

Of course, code-wise I actually spent a fair bit working on Kade Engine to make the mod function, but because of a still present lack of experience with code, I ended up giving up and asking help from someone to code. I'd get a coder, but any work on that as well wasn't done.

So, why was the mod cancelled? Simple, the whole Sky debacle.

As I've grown lazier and not work much on the mod, just waiting for the week to be somewhat functional so I could contact the musician, the whole Sky thing happened, and as such I've grown deeply uncomfortable with the FNF Modding Community, and cancelled it alongside my more ambitious mods at once.

Was that a good idea? I don't know, if I could I would of just released the mod and leave it there, but oh well, it ended up being cancelled, I've tried to revive it a couple of times now using Psych Engine, but the truth is that I don't feel passionate about working on anything FNF related. If I came back and released it, it would probably only be to tie up loose ends, as I somewhat regret not having worked on the mod. Not like I still have the skills to work on it myself, and I don't wanna ask anyone for help on it, I don't really interact much with the FNF community beyond just looking at the progress of a couple of mods and writing the story for one, and I don't really care anymore about the base game.

I thought of making the assets public use but I doubt anyone would use them for their mod since making 1bit stuff is fairly easy if you got a somewhat decent idea of how spriting works. I am still proud of the art, though.

So that's the whole 1Bit, 1Song archive post. Thanks for reading, and hope that while this mod is cancelled, at least liked the pretty art.
